2023.09.07

On September 4, IAA MOBILITY 2023 (hereinafter referred to as IAA Auto Show) kicked off in Munich. As one of the world's top five auto shows, IAA MOBILITY 2023 is a global platform for gathering resources in the field of mobility, showcasing the innovative technology of intelligent mobility and leading the development trend of transportation and mobility, which is known as the "Olympic Games" of future mobility.

At this year's show, pure electric vehicle products and innovative technologies have once again become the main protagonists. A series of famous automobile brands, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Renault, Volkswagen, BYD and so on, had "world premieres" of new electric products, and component giants such as Schaeffler and Bosch also endeavored to display their innovative solutions for new energy vehicles.

As a "newcomer" in IAA Auto Show, PanGood brings the world's leading axial flux motors and electric drive solution products, as well as PanGood’s world premiere of its first axial flux wheel hub electric drive solution in Hall A3, C21, to provide more energy-saving and high-efficiency electric drive value model for the technological progress of new energy vehicles.

In the initial year of utilizing distributed drives, the axial flux motor is deemed as the optimal solution

The year 2023 is the initial year of the development of distributed drive technology for new energy vehicles. Since the release of the "YANGWANG" series at the beginning of the year, almost all new energy vehicles to be released in 2023, including concept cars and new production vehicles, have been equipped with distributed drive technology. In the last two months, the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven concept, the ZEEKR 001 FR, and BMW's Vision Neue Klasse concept unveiled during the IAA Auto Show have all utilized distributed electric drive systems with multi-motor control.

The industry believes that the distributed drive system has the advantages of flexible body layout, compact structure, easy to realize the modular design of the chassis; at the same time, the drive/braking torque of each wheel is independently controllable, with high mobility and high reliability, and it is easier to realize the active control of the vehicle. Therefore, the distributed drive is not only the core technology of the new energy vehicles, but also the ultimate solution to realize the self-driving cars in the future.

However, distributed drive requires that each drive wheel be equipped with an independent drive motor as much as possible, which will put higher demands on the vehicle chassis arrangement. Compared to radial flux motors, which are widely used today, axial flux motors are regarded as "the best solution for high-performance vehicles on the road to electrification at present" by a number of luxury automotive brands such as Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, and Ferrari, due to a series of advantages such as their small size, light weight, high efficiency range, and high power density. In July 2021, Mercedes-Benz announced that it had acquired YASA, an axial flux electric drive technology company, and planned to use axial flux motors as the main drive motors for all models on the AMG.EA pure electric vehicle platform from 2025 onwards.

In terms of technology development and product application of axial flux motors, PanGood from China is the first enterprise in the world to achieve large-scale mass production and application of axial flux motors.

From wheel drive to hub drive, PanGood is powering the new future of intelligent mobility with cutting-edge technology

In this year's IAA Auto Show, PanGood comprehensively displayed ICS120K, ICD150K, ICS232K and other power drive motors, as well as a variety of innovative products from centralized integrated distributed drive assembly to wheel hub electric drive solutions. Among them, PanGood ICS120K motors have been utilized as city bus wheel-side drive motors for more than 8,000 sets in total, and PanGood ICD150K motors, as the core drive motors of distributed drive technology for passenger cars, have once again aroused the attention of the whole world in this year’s IAA Auto Show.

ICD150K is designed and developed by PanGood, the weight of the motor is only 24kg, the peak output power is up to 150kW, and the axial dimension is only 132.4mm. Two ICD150K assembled with the motor controller and reducer, the weight of the system assembly is only 100kg, and the peak power can be up to 300kW, and the peak torque of the wheel-end is nearly 6,000N·m, and it can be freely selected from "Parallel Shaft Arrangement Program" or "Coaxial Arrangement Program" according to the vehicle model and the design requirement of platform development. The motor adopts oil-cooled heat dissipation, which makes its performance more stable and reliable under peak working conditions; meanwhile, it adopts electronic differential control, which improves the handling stability and driving performance of the whole vehicle by independently controlling the torque of the motor, thus enabling the whole vehicle to have a smaller turning radius, better cornering maneuverability, and stronger start-up acceleration.

PanGood’s PDS100K axial flux wheel hub electric drive solution, with a planned peak power of 100kW and a total system weight of only 34Kg (excluding wheel bearings and brakes), not only greatly reduces the unsprung mass, but also reserves more space for the integration of the steering and braking systems. At the same time, the planned maximum wheel-end torque reaches 3,870N·m, which can comprehensively satisfy the needs of various operating conditions of family cars. With the unique features of axial flux motors, such as small size, light weight, and high efficiency range, this system was hailed as "the most likely wheel hub motor solution for mass production applications so far" at the IAA auto show.
